Born in Austin, Texas and raised in Altadena, California, Carmen Bradford grew up with music in her home and in her heart. It was only natural that Carmen would follow in the footsteps of her great family legacy, being the daughter of legendary trumpeter/ composer Bobby Bradford and world renowned vocalist/composer Melba Joyce. Her grandfather Melvin Moore sang with Lucky Millender and Dizzy Gillespie's Big Band in the 1940's, making Carmen the third generation of incredible musicians. She has carved out a place in music history for herself and is playing an integral role in this uniquely American art form called jazz. Carmen Bradford is Jazz Royalty.
In 1982, Carmen was discovered and hired by William “Count” Basie, and was the featured vocalist in the Legendary Count Basie Orchestra for nine years. Carmen performed on two Grammy Award Winning albums with the Basie Band, and collaborated with George Benson on the Grammy Award Winning album “Big Boss Band”. In her electrifying performances around the world, Carmen proves again and again her outstanding ability to sing all forms of jazz, be it straight ahead jazz, blues, or jazz fusion -- and swing it like nobody can.
Scotty Barnhart is an internationally acclaimed Jazz trumpeter, composer, arranger, educator, author, two-time Grammy Winner, and in 2013 was selected to be Director of The Count Basie Orchestra. Prior to 2013, he was CBO’s featured trumpet soloist for 20 years, and in 2015 was Executive Producer of A Very Swingin’ Basie Christmas!, the very first Christmas recording in the history of The Count Basie Orchestra. It went to #1 on the charts.
Scotty appears on three critically acclaimed recordings with pianist Marcus Roberts and over twenty others with artists as diverse as Tony Bennett, Diana Krall, and Ray Charles. He has performed with Frank Sinatra, Wynton Marsalis, Herbie Hancock, Quincy Jones, The Duke Ellington Orchestra, Nat Adderley, Aretha Franklin, Barbara Streisand and George Benson, performed at The Academy Awards, and is in demand as a soloist and lecturer on jazz history all over the world. In 2009, Unity Music released his solo CD, Say It Plain. It reached #3 on the Jazz Charts.
Scotty is co-founder and Artistic Director of The Florida Jazz and Blues Festival, and Professor of Jazz Trumpet at Florida State University, where two of his former students won 1st place in the National Jazz Trumpet Competition. His groundbreaking book, The World of Jazz Trumpet – a Comprehensive History and Practical Philosophy, was published in December 2005 to rave reviews. He is a graduate of Florida A&M University with a degree in Music Education, and in 2017 he was honored with other distinguished alumni with a permanent plaque and photo being placed within the Gallery Of Distinction in the FAMU Department of Music. He is also profiled in the book Trumpet Kings which places him among the greatest jazz trumpeters in history. He resides in Los Angeles, California and Tallahassee, Florida.
Mr. Sipp “The Mississippi Blues Child”
Don’t be fooled by his boyish appearance or the Erkel glasses he and his bandmates wear on stage or the astronomical ascendance he achieved after winning the International Blues Challenge 3 years ago – Mr. Sipp isn’t a blues child, as his on stage alter ego implies. He’s definitely a man among men as soon as he steps foot on stage. One of Sipp’s favorite expressions is “Let’s knock a hole in it,” and The Mississippi Blues Child does just that, as evidenced by his recent win at the Blues Music Awards for Best New Artist Blues Album. Born in Magnolia, Mississippi, his given name, Castro Coleman, Mr. Sipp has already paid his dues with a remarkable 26 years as band leader, singer-songwriter, producer, session guitarist and label boss in the gospel market.
He’s a restless, creative spirit who has taken his talents to the next level by immersing himself in rocking blues while also carving out a new role as a blues innovator. He rocks and funks things up, then momentarily slips into r&b and gets all soulful.
His band dives into deep grooves with a rare sense of timing that uses the vibe as an energy boost. On songs like ‘Juke Joint’ he brilliantly fuses his intensity with the kind of ‘call and response’ moments that were the bread and butter of his gospel past and now form an essential part of his current guitar-led bluster. It’s soulfully funky and fresh.
New Orleans Suspects
“Let’s Get It Started”
New Orleans Suspects, riding their Top 10 blues radio-charted album Kaleidoscoped, and fresh from tours with Bonerama, Leftover Salmon, New Mastersounds and Paul Barerre and Fred Tackett of Little Feat, make their debut appearance at the Florida Jazz and Blues Festival Oct. 29, 2017. The New Orleans Suspects are a band that’s fallen into a groove and are rapidly working their way into the consciousness of educated music fans around the country. With a sound that’s familiar enough to be welcoming, yet challenging enough to please the most critical of purists, The Suspects are putting their own spin on the music of New Orleans as they layer boogie-woogie piano, soulful blues guitar and jazzy horns on top of funky bass lines and complex rhythms. The result is a wildly infectious sound that pays tribute to everyone from James Booker and Bobby Charles, to The Meters and Galactic.
Refugees from a variety of New Orleans outfits such as The Dirty Dozen Brass Band, The Neville Brothers and The Radiators join for a rousing celebration of rock, world beat, and lots of Crescent City funk. With the back beats of veteran drummer Mean Willie Green (Neville Bros., Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, Grateful Dead) these guys lock together and explode on stage.
